Months of January and February can be very depressing for a lot of people. The whole Festive Season is over, you stop hanging out so much with your friends (you’ve overdone it in December) and the whole excitement and rushing comes to an end. So you end up being alone and nothing to do all of a sudden. You pack away the decorations and the lights aren’t there anymore and everything gets so quiet.
Well, that was never the case with me. Ever since high school everyone was telling me how depressing January is and how it’s their least favourite month of the year. And I never really understood that concept, because I never ever felt this way. That’s probably because I have my birthday in January and after New Year’s eve was finished I’ve always been anticipating my birthday, so I was never depressed :). I always get that special feeling in January, even now, when I’m older and I’d prefer to be young again, I still can’t wait to have my birthday :). And now, with my family, there are two more birthdays to celebrate in January, my youngest daughter’s and my husband’s. How cool is that :). Luckily my first daughter has her birthday in November, so it’s not all in the same month. Oh, and there is also my husband’s and mine anniversary when we first started dating too, so plenty to celebrate in January!
But not everyone is born in January, so I have a list of things that cheer me up during the winter, no matter which month it is.
Do Get Out
Get as much sunlight as you can. I always feel full of energy on a sunny day, so try to make the most of it and be outside. Get that energy when you can, so that even when the grey days arrive, you don’t feel so down and energy less.
Even when you don’t feel like doing them or even if you feel like spending your days inside tucked away in warm blankets, make yourself go out and play like a child. Make a snowman or snow angles. Go crazy, it will feel better instantly. Or just go for a long walk in the park, woods or anywhere you like.
Spend a day in a SPA or go for just a massage, whatever feels right for you. Or you can make a bath at home, light a scented candle and put on some music that you like.
Revive Your Hobby Or Make A New One
Read a book or knit or crochet or write a blog or any hobby you might enjoy. And stop making excuses why you can’t do stuff. You can, you just don’t feel like it, but you should kick yourself in the butt and start doing things :).
You see this birdie in the photo? It came to me while I was taking photos of freshly fallen snow. And it wasn’t scared of me at all. It came within a few feet and it made me smile. You see, I was endorsing my photography hobby and this little fella showed up and made me happy instantly.
And I mean any sport. I always feel better after doing some cardio. It feels like my whole body and sole have rejuvenated and I can take on anything.
You can do it indoors or outdoors, which ever feels better to you and whichever makes you more comfortable. If it’s too cold for jogging outside, than do it inside. I like jogging and I always do it inside, because I find outdoors to distracting for me. But there is also a number of great winter sports that you can do outside.
I hope at least one of these works for you. I am not any good at winter sports, but I do winter activities because of the kids. And I must say it feels great when you make a snowman or just roll around in snow. Or when you have to pull your kids on a sledge. And you end up being the one that’s tired, not the kids like you intended. I wondered off a bit here, but still, you know what I mean.
And what is your pick me up thing during winter time?
Thank you for reading and I hope that January isn’t that bad for you :). xoxo
