Hi guys!!! I have swatches of the latest collection from Essie. It is a Retro Revival collection called Starry Starry Night. I can tell you that it was very anticipated collection, there was even a preorder going on on Essie Canada and USA. And all the fuss was due to one shade that is among these, it was one of the most wanted discontinued shades in the world, that is Starry Starry Night.
Some time last year Essie Canada started the campaign of asking followers to vote for the shade that they would love to see back in the store shelves. I just remember that most of the people voted for Starry Starry Night, and I was one of them. And then at the end of the year I saw that they are actually bringing back six shades and not only one as I first thought. They revealed five shades, but the sixth remained secret. Well, everybody was hoping it would be the sparkly blue polish, and in the end it was. And now I have the whole collection and I am going to show you the swatches of all the polishes.
Birthday Suit – Essie Retro Revival
It was a part of the original 12 shades that Essie Weingarten released in 1981. It is very sheer, I did two coats here, so maybe three or four would be totally opaque, but I doubt it. It’s a beautiful nude and considering it’s from 1981 it’s great, because it is still in style.
Cabana Boy – Essie Retro Revival
The original release was in the 2005, so it’s among the youngest in the bunch. It is a shimmery grey that has a touch of frost in it. It fully covers your nails with three coats and it is very beautiful. I have to tell you that I wasn’t expecting the shimmer in this shade, it looked creme in the bottle. But it was a nice surprise when I started applying it and I discovered the shimmer.
Bikini With A Martini – Essie Retro Revival
It was created in 2006, so it is the youngest here. I did two coats and as you can see it is still very sheer. It was easy to apply, but I don’t like the fact that it is so sheer. It was too subtle on its own.
But as you can see in the photos bellow it can be used as a top coat over diferent colours. I only did it over two polishes, but you can put it over almost anything.
Above: one coat over Birthday Suit
Above: one coat over Cabana Boy – I love this combination!
Sequin Sash – Essie Retro Revival
It was born in 2005. It is not that far back, but apparently these kind of sheers were in at that time. It’s amazing how the polish has changed during these 10 years and I am soo thankful that it did.
I did two coats with this one too and again I would prefer it over some other creme polish. I didn’t put it over anything but I bet it would look amazing over darker colours.
Life Of The Party – Essie Retro Revival
The first time this polish was released was in the year 2002 and oh my god!! I love it. It’s red and it’s shimmery red *_*. I actually like that it’s a bit coppery red and it doesn’t look retro to me at all.
Though the application of the first coat was somewhat strange. It looked lumpy, bumpy and brushstrokey. And the brush strokes were strange, it looked like I applied the polish in several directions at the time, funny. But the second coat sorted everything out. It’s gorgeous!!!
Above: I applied one coat of matte top coat and I love it that way too! It makes it soft and comfy.
Starry Starry Night – Essie Retro Revival
As I said before it was one of the most wanted discontinued polishes on Earth. I have read that some of the bottles were sold for 200$. I think it’s not worth that much, but apparently to some people it is. It is from the 1997 and I was still in high school back then, it’s that old :O. I also saw that this formula is quite different from the old one, especially the glittery parts. You can check Michelle’s comparison post and you will see the difference. I like this one and I like the old one and I hear that Colors by Llarowe – Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star is the closest dupe of the original, so I think I am going to buy it and compare it to this one.
I did two easy coats. The formula is a bit on the thick side, but that is probably because of all the glitter. If it wasn’t that thick the glitter would just sink to the bottom. It’s gorgeous and I don’t care that it’s not an exact dupe of the original. I’ll just buy me that one from the CbL and I’ll have the original :).
Above: again, a matte top coat and I love it this way too!!
What do you think of all the resurrected shades? Has Essie picked and brought back the right ones? I think they did. Yes there are some old fashioned polishes, but I bet there are many people who love them and are happy they are available again, because these days you just can’t get shades like them, at least I don’t find them anywhere (this applies to sheer shimmers).
Thank you for reading and have a great day!!
